This coastal apartment is a 'test-case'. A research into durability in interior renovation. It's been a recurring theme for some time in our office; how can we go for a more durable approach to renovating. There's not that many interior examples out there, so we created our own. We translated this into three 'tools': conservation, re-use and re-value. Welcome to Paloma.

The holiday apartment is located in Ostend, the Belgian city by the sea. We started the renovation with demolishing and evaluating which elements were suitable for conservation. The wood ceiling is the original ceiling, which we cleaned and re-used. The shelves are recuperated dressing doors and the existing glass partition is re-used to close off the hall.

The heart of the project is the stainless steel kitchen. We made the kitchen area part of the main circulation, connecting it with all the day-functions. We chose to integrate it as seperate module; not fitted in the space. If wanted, we can take this 'block' on to the next apartment.

The re-use of materials is also reflected in the original pink bathroom tiles. Adding a shower volume in grey microcement to complement these existing qualities. The bedrooms are 'basic' but with splashes of colour and art, like the electric blue dressing element.

Besides a testing ground for durability, we also researched the possibilities of creating our own 'products'. The sink in the bathroom and the plexi glass table are two examples. We are currently working hard on perfecting them. Keep a close eye on our instagram, if interested.
