TWO SISTERS

Renovation of two coastal holiday homes for two sisters on the same plot. Each house with a somewhat different aesthetic, but clearly 'related'. We created levels of privacy through the positioning of windows, entrances and white wooden dividers. The materiality of both houses is re-used, especially when it comes to the exterior. By changing the direction of the brick formwork you feel the contrast between the existing volume and the height extension. On the back of the main house the covered terrace is supported by a brick fire place and has exposed structural beams and supports; a design feature also seen in the interior of the houses.

The front house is connected to the street and has an open plan kitchen and living space and a closed-off mudroom. Materiality and 'holiday-feeling' were in the design briefing of the clients. We added colour, warmth and openness throughout the renovation.

The second house is a more compact volume with smaller spaces. The first floor was halved to create a greater sense of space. Hereby the spiral staircase becomes the heart of the new interior. Its slender design ensures that all functions around remain visually connected. Curves were also used for a custom sink, a custom extractor and a custom sofa. This was necessary to make everything feel as slim and light as possible.
